Our AI Policy
As the use of AI becomes more ubiquitous in writing and publishing, we remain committed to publishing books written and edited by humans.
This means we will carefully select books for our hybrid publishing imprint that we can confidently promote as human-crafted. Human-crafted books are written by humans who do their own research by reading, assimilating, and citing original sources.
While we take a stand for human-crafted books, we recognize that authors may choose to use AI for some basic administrative and support functions. Our goal is to be transparent and to receive transparency from our authors about how they may use AI in their work and how we as an organization may use AI. Below, we’ve outlined acceptable uses of AI and uses that would exclude authors from publishing with our hybrid service.
Authors need to be aware that book distributors, including Amazon KDP and IngramSpark, require authors/publishers to disclose any use of AI in their books, whether in the writing
or graphics.
Acceptable Uses of AI (Allowed)
The following uses are generally allowed for authors working with Weaving Influence Press.
Grammar, Mechanics, and Consistency Checks
- Tools like Grammarly or similar for: Grammar and spelling checks
- Stylistic suggestions (accepted or rejected by the human author)
- Consistency checking (e.g., tools like PerfectIt / Chicago style helpers)
You may use AI as a second opinion, not to rewrite whole passages.
Transcription
Transcribing audio interviews or conversations so authors can quote people accurately or work from spoken material they created (e.g., a Zoom monologue about their own ideas).
Summaries for Research Purposes (with Human Authorship of the Book)
It is acceptable for authors to use AI to summarize articles, papers, exhibits, or other artifacts the author has already collected or to distill voluminous research they’ve gathered so they can then write in their own words.
In this case, the AI summary is a thinking aid, not text to paste into the manuscript.
Outlines or Summaries Derived from the Author’s Own Original Material
Using a private GPT and original content from the author, written or spoken, it is acceptable to ask AI for outlines or summaries from those assets, provided the author then writes and refines this content.
Word Choice and Terminology Suggestions
Authors may use AI like a thesaurus for getting word suggestions or definitions. We recommend that the final words be human-selected.
Formatting and Citations Cleanup (With Human Verification)
You may use AI to help format citations and references, adhering to the Chicago Manual of Style.
In our publishing process, human editors will verify the accuracy of the citation formatting.
Using Private / Non-Training Models
If you choose to use AI in ways indicated by our AI Philosophy, we recommend you protect your content by using only private tools that do not use uploads to train other large language models.
Unacceptable Uses of AI (Prohibited)
Weaving Influence Press will not publish books with AI use as outlined below. If you have used AI in the following ways, your book may be a candidate for our self-publishing support services, provided you are willing to accurately disclose your AI use when you upload your book for distribution.
Generating First Drafts or Substantive Text Content for the Book
This would include asking AI to write a chapter, draft a section, or write your book.
Generating Outlines or Structures Without Original Creative Input
This would include asking AI to outline a book for you, asking AI to do the research to provide content to go with the outline it created, or asking AI to do all your research for you.
Generating Graphics or Visuals for the Book
We do not include AI-generated graphics and visuals in our books or on the covers. Where you may have used AI for inspiration, we require that all graphics and visuals be designed by humans if they are to be included in a book or used on the cover.
A Note About Copyrights and AI-Generated Text
AI-generated text and graphics are not copyrightable, and thus should not be incorporated into a published work.
We strongly recommend adding an AI statement to your copyright page to give notice that your book is human-crafted and to disclose any AI use in the work.
