A few weeks ago, I spent some time at the Chick-Fil-A corporate headquarters. I found a lot to love at their offices, and I’m not just talking about the chicken — which I DO love.
Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of the offices: whiteboards everywhere! Conference rooms, cubicles, and offices all incorporated spaces for brainstorming and idea gathering.
Immediately, I thought of my home office, which (until today) lacked any space for me to put my big ideas into a big space.
I often sketch out business ideas on paper, which results in lots of scraps and stacks of paper on my desk. This works, but it feels confining.
My big ideas need a big space.
I rearranged the furniture in my office to clear a wall and went hunting for a large whiteboard. I didn’t find one, and I was impatient to get started with a bigger space for my ideas, so I bought two smaller whiteboards instead of one large one.
And now I have room for creativity. (And, incidentally, so do my daughters and their friends, happily drawing on a Sunday afternoon.)
Tell me something! How do you make room for creativity? What big ideas do you have?
I am the founder/CEO of the Weaving Influence team, the author of Reach: Creating the Biggest Possible Audience for Your Message, Book, or Cause, and the host of the Book Marketing Action Podcast. I’m a wife and mom of three kids, and I enjoy running, reading, writing, coffee, and dark chocolate.
My 12-year old son uses dry-erase markers on his mirror closet doors. Works beautifully and comes off easily.
I do my best work in my home office. I have to go to work every day and I work very long hours. So when I sit in my home office I first thank God over and over and over for giving me this space. I turn on favorite music, like the one playing now is Michael W Smith’s album Freedom. I am overwhelmed by the calmness that comes over me when I’m in here and letting my heart sing and before I know it, I am thinking new thoughts, putting pieces of the project puzzle together that I didn’t see locking into place before. So how do I find ways to be creative, I only have to be in my office at home and that’s where it starts.
Love this idea! I’m going to go hang my white board.
