How we build trust is shaped by culture. The diverse identities that make us who we are — our national, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, gender, where we were raised, age, sexual orientation, religion, etc. — shape our values, mindsets, and norms.
In the workplace, these cultural identities influence our behaviors and communication styles — and they have a huge influence on how we perceive and react to our colleagues (often negatively).
To build inclusive workplaces where people feel like they belong, everyone — especially those in positions of formal authority, as well as those whose identities confer more privilege — must take it upon themselves to bridge these cultural differences. In doing so, organizations can build more cohesive cultures in which all voices are heard, people feel recognized and valued, and organizational goals can be met and exceeded.
