Find New Connections

| | 12-Minute Tips | 5 Comments

In a recent post, I challenged you to spending 12 minutes each day connecting with others through social media.

January 1, 2009 marked my entry into the world of social media through Facebook. I joined on New Year’s Day and finding new connections through social media changed my life.

Although I don’t seek more connections for numbers alone, I believe in finding and connecting to as many people as possible because you never know which connections will be important for you — or (especially) for others.

So, my belief and practice is to regularly look for new connections on all my favorite social media sites.

Today, I invite you to spend 12 minutes finding new connections.

Set your timer for 12 minutes. Choose a social media site and spend 12 minutes looking for and connecting to new contacts.

On Facebook, send friend requests.

On Twitter, follow new people. Look for people who share common interests or geography. For help finding people to follow, check out wefollow.com.

On LinkedIn, make connections. Look at suggestions from LinkedIn or check for connections at former employers.

On Google+, add people to your circles. If you are not using Google+ yet, check out this post for a suggestion about how to get started.

You’ll be amazed at how many new connections you can make in just 12 minutes. (If you like, come back to this post or to our Facebook page to talk about the new connections you find today.)

Remember, focused, consistent effort makes a difference. Join me tomorrow for another 12 Minute Tip.

This is a great tip. Taking a few moments to broaden you circles is a great way to utilize social media!

I totally agree! Although, I have to admit that I tend to do this in spurts rather than 12-minute stages…

I spent a couple of hours last week reconnecting with people on Twitter I hadn’t spoken with in awhile, but had had good conversations with in the past. The New Year coming up gave me a good opportunity to reconnect and let them know I was thinking of them.

And I spent some time looking at all of my 2nd level connections in LinkedIn, identifying those who were people I actually knew or wanted to get to know, and sending them invitations to connect.

For me, it’s very much about the relationships, and not the numbers.
